Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking in 2D: Kibble-Zurek Mechanism in Temperature Quenched Colloidal Monolayers

The Kibble-Zurek mechanism describes the formation of topological defects during spontaneous symmetry breaking for quite different systems. Shortly after the big bang, the isotropy of the Higgsfield is broken during the expansion and cooling of the universe. Kibble proposed the formation of monopoles, strings, and membranes in the Higgs field since the phase of the symmetry broken field can not...

Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking in the Brane-World

A simplified Randall-Sundrum-like model in 6 dimensions is discussed. The extra two dimensions correspond to the cone. The effective four-dimensional scalar self-interacting theory is studied at one-loop level. The contributions due to 6-dimensional parameters in four-dimensional beta-functions appear. Using such beta-functions the oneloop effective potential is calculated. The possibility of s...

Grain-boundary-induced melting in quenched polycrystalline monolayers.

Melting in two dimensions can successfully be explained with the Kosterlitz-Thouless-Halperin-Nelson-Young (KTHNY) scenario which describes the formation of the high-symmetry phase with the thermal activation of topological defects within an (ideally) infinite monodomain. With all state variables being well defined, it should hold also as freezing scenario where oppositely charged topological d...

Specific heat in two-dimensional melting.

We report the specific heat cN around the melting transition(s) of micrometer-sized superparamagnetic particles confined in two dimensions, calculated from fluctuations of positions and internal energy, and corresponding Monte Carlo simulations. Since colloidal systems provide single particle resolution, they offer the unique possibility to compare the experimental temperatures of the peak posi...

Berezinski-Kosterlitz-Thouless Transition in Spin Systems

Spontaneous continuous symmetry breaking in two dimensions is not possible for non-zero temperatures. Therefore, common phase transitions are not expected in a two-dimensional xy-model. The appearance of vortices, however, induces the Berezinski-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition. The motivation of this chapter is to derive the arguments for such a transition and investigate some of its properties.
